On August 27, 2020, the Association of Compilers of Ratings, Rankings and Other Performance Evaluations (ASR) published the results of the Moscow International University Rating "The Three University Missions" (MosIUR).

“The Three University Missions” is an academic rating that evaluates education, science and interaction with society — the three key missions of the university, according to the initiators of the rating — the Russian Union of Rectors.

The rating results were presented by the General Director of the RAEX Rating Agency ("RAEX-Analytics») Dmitry Grishankov and Rector of Lomonosov Moscow State University, President of the Russian Union of Rectors Viktor Sadovnichiy.

The MosIUR 2020 ranking includes 1,500 universities from 97 countries — a quarter more than a year ago (1,200 universities from 79 countries).

According to the number of participants in the list, Russia, along with the United States and China, entered the top three world leaders. Leading Russian universities have improved their positions.

According to Dmitry Grishankov, General Director of the Association of Rating Compilers, the rating is at the top of a pyramid consisting of many elements that allow you to find similar universities, competitors, and compare their strengths and weaknesses. This rating gives a number of opportunities to compare the performance of different universities.

If you take a look at the top 3 Russian universities, you will find them somewhere in the third or fourth place of the ranking. If you take the top 8 – then somewhere around the seventh place; if you take the top 25 – they are somewhere in eighth place. I should notice that only 15 countries are ready to present such teams of 25 universities. No matter how you change different indicators, Russia does not fall below the 10th place.

Russian New University (RosNOU) entered the interval group of 1201−1300 in the world ranking and the interval group of 58−73 among Russian universities, improving the result of last year by one position.

Three Russian universities are in the top 100 of the world ranking: Lomonosov Moscow State University (21st place), Saint Petersburg State University (40th place) and MIPT (46th place).

Fifteen other Russian universities were among the top 500 in the world. These are HSE, MEPhI, NSU, ITMO, Tomsk State University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Ural Federal University, MISIS, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Kazan University, Lobachevsky University, RANEPA, MGIMO University and RUDN University.

“The Three University Missions" Rating is a mirror that reflects the effectiveness of the use of invested resources. The rating assesses the impact of the university on society and the economy – what the "Program of Strategic Academic Leadership" of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation is now referring to.

The development of the Internet and virtual services, robotics and its impact on human labor, and the development of life science are all components of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is also called the knowledge-based economy. Research and creativity play a key role today, and research at the global level and scale is an expensive and highly competitive activity, where the leaders are universities that attach great importance to research.
