The ranking includes 867 universities, among which 95 are Russian ones (91 are state-funded and four are private).
On April 27, 2021, the Round University Ranking (RUR) Rating Agency presented the RUR 2021 World University Ranking.
The list of the world's leading universities includes 867 universities representing 74 countries. This year’s ranking includes 38 universities and three countries more than a year ago. The ranking evaluated the activities of universities in four areas: the quality of teaching, the quality of research, the level of internationalization and the level of financial stability.
The first place in the ranking was taken by Harvard University (USA), the second — California Institute of Technology (Caltech, USA), the third — Stanford University (USA), the fourth — Imperial College London (UK), the fifth — Karolinska Institute (Sweden).
The best Russian university — Lomonosov Moscow State University — reached 91st place (an increase of 6 positions compared to last year). The top 200 includes three more Russian universities: MEPhI — 101st place (+20 positions), Tomsk State University — 103rd (+36), MIPT — 106th place (+45 positions).
Vice-Rector for International Relations of Tomsk State University Artem Rykun:
For us, ratings are not an end in themselves, but an opportunity to organize work processes at the university. It's a mirror that we look into to see what our resources are. The main thing for us is to follow the principles of classical education, which allows us to quickly improve our ranking position.
Vice-Rector of MEPhI Elena Vesna:
The RUR rating criteria — stability and balance — are close to MEPhI. We try to maintain a balance of science, education, and innovation. Our main partner is Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, a leader in innovation. We work together, we have a special system of work aimed at achieving high-quality results as a consequence — exactly the kind of specialists we want to see.
The total number of Russian universities included in the rating has also increased: from 82 in 2020 to 95 in 2021. The fifth place among them was taken by St. Petersburg State University — 305th position in the world (+15), 95th place was taken by the newcomer of the rating, Murmansk Arctic State University (858th position in the world).
Rector of MISIS (309th place in the world (+82 positions), sixth — in Russia (+2 positions)) Alevtina Chernikova:
It is impossible to quickly improve ranking positions without systematic work with the business community, the development of educational and scientific infrastructure. We strive to ensure that researchers join the classrooms, and today a quarter of MISIS teachers are young researchers.
Acting Rector of Omsk State University (763rd place in the world, 62nd – in Russia; for the first time included in the ranking) Dmitry Maevsky
The rating is a tool for intra-university transformations that helps to evaluate the organization of internal business processes and correlate their activities with the scientific agenda.
In a year, Russian New University (RosNOU) rose from 746 to 702 place in the world (+44 positions), among Russian universities in the rating — from 61 to 49 place (+12 positions).
The experts particularly appreciated the quality of teaching and the quality of scientific research: according to these indicators, the university ranks 587th and 697th in the world, respectively (49th and 30th in Russia).
Rector of RosNOU Vladimir Zernov:
I would like to draw your attention to Korean private universities: they occupy leading positions in international rankings largely due to the efficiency of resource use. I would like to see the support of private universities in Russia, which have every chance to become leaders in international rankings. This is impossible without state support.
Although RosNOU has moved forward in the ranking largely due to the activation of scientific work, increasing the ratio of the number of publications to the number of teachers, we are still confident: it is necessary to strengthen the applied nature of the rating indicators, take into account not only scientometrics, but also the technologies actually created.
In addition to RosNOU, the RUR 2021 World University Ranking includes three other private Russian universities: the Russian School of Economics — 651st in the world (-13 positions), 34th in Russia (-7 positions); Innopolis University — 683rd in the world (-38 positions), 42nd in Russia (-13 positions); the European University in St. Petersburg – 730th in the world (unchanged), 54th in Russia (-1 position).
Oleg Utkin, Managing Director of Clarivate in Russia and the CIS:
The methodology of the RUR rating is universal, and this contributes to the development of a more correct strategy of the university, because the indicators of educational activity and publication activity, citation are only part of the strategy.
RUR Editor Oleg Solovyov:
What makes the RUR rating a unique project? This includes inclusiveness (any university can participate in the ranking, regardless of its size, age, or form of foundation), stability, and balance.
