Students from Hong Kong get acquainted with educational programs of RosNOU

On January 10, 2019, a presentation of the joint activities of RosNOU and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) was held at the Russian New University (RosNOU).

The event, which was organized by the Center of the Asia-Pacific Region of the International Affairs & Academic Mobility Directorate of RosNOU, was attended by more than 60 students of Hong Kong and Russian universities. They got acquainted with the programs of the summer schools for RosNOU students in Hong Kong, as well as for PolyU students in Russia; the project on working internships for foreigners in Russia (in 2019, for the first time, prospective students from PolyU participated in this project) and other areas of joint university activities.
The presentation was held in English and Chinese.

“I studied in China and was very delighted to take part in this event,” – said Anna Fomina, a student at the Institute of Humanitarian Technologies of RosNOU, who is studying Chinese as a first foreign language in the “Linguistics” educational program. “During my studies, I took an active part in events related to China, worked in Chinese companies, but yesterday it was the first time when I tried myself as a consecutive translator into Chinese. I realized that being a translator is more difficult than to be a guide for Chinese tourists, it requires a lot of practical experience. A professional consecutive interpreter must not only have a high-level knowledge of native and foreign languages and special vocabulary but also have the ability not to get confused in public. Also, listening skills are very important in our profession: before translating a text, you need to carefully listen to the speaker to the very end to understand the meaning of the speech. If you have any doubts, you should paint mentally a picture of what the author wanted to say, and only then translate.

I want to thank the International Affairs & Academic Mobility Directorate for the opportunity to become a translator of this event and for the assistance provided to the young specialist. I was able to test my training and made new friends.”
